The books that are considered great later are books you've never heard of. And they certainly won't be the woke books of the day.

I don't even use tiktok but I feel like a lot of great books became popular because of it, even older ones. The only think I don't really understand is the hype around bad written, shallow romance books? Some things should stay on Wattpad. People can read what they want of course but some people really want to tell me Coleen Hoover is on of the best writers???

“crying in h mart”, “pachinko” and “on earth we’re briefly gorgeous” would be really nice additions to this list! all very personal, intimate stories regarding - in their own ways - the asian diaspora, with beautiful insights about the human condition and its many facets, like grief, love, trauma, family, etc.. strongly recommend them for anyone reading this :)

Ian McEwan is great tho, especially his book Atonement! I don´t think most dads would pick up his books, since they are often historical fiction, with psychological themes as well as romance, but perhaps my view of dad taste is too narrow. I think Dan Brown books give that dad vibe, maybe because I saw my dad reading Angels & Demons lmao

The reviews on Pride and Prejudice brought me back to my high school RAGE about that book 😂. It was assigned to us for English class and I remember absolutely hating every cursed second I spent reading it. It was literally the only English class novel I abandoned a quarter of the way through and just Sparknotes-ed for the book report. I hated every character, every scene, every line of dialogue. Up to that point I had never felt so much anger over a book. I never read Austen again after that 😂.

This is so pretentious. “It reads like a classic” means that no one will care. The school system destroys the desire of youths to read. I think the only 2 you have right are The Book Thief and The Hunger Games, and that’s only if people aren’t forced to read them.

I am a die hard fan of CMBYN, I completely understand the argument about the age difference and wouldn’t tell someone that they’re “wrong” if they hate it, but I see it as less of a love story and more of a yearning to become the person you admire and love so much. I see Elio’s obsession as being more of a attatching himself to someone he recognises, a home, a person he aches to become and morph into, hence all the nakedness and skin on skin stuff

It’s hilarious how the actual renaissance writer can imagine better for her male leads than the modern writer. The rakish man who wanted to change his ways for a good woman was the VILLAIN in Mansfield park, and the morally consistent man is preferred, and being overtly a sexist (Mr Collins, Mr Elton, to a degree Mr Rushwood) is an exclusion to being a love interest regardless of money. Heck, all the male leads would be villains in Austen

I very rarely find a modern author worth-reading. Many are often 'woke' before the term entered the mainstream; 'politics is downstream from culture' and the university, starting with the 60s, began to deconstruct and destroy the novel. Or books are beautifully written without being interesting, that is, the character development takes a backseat to 'look at what I am capable off' sentence structures (don't get me started on books without punctuation or overused stream of conscious ramblings). Or the other extreme: characters are so quirky it feels over-the-top. This list, I will keep in mind but I am tired of the endless disappointment.

Hey there, Jack! Been a silent watcher of your channel thus far♥️ So, it would be real nice if you Could please do some book recommendations on "light -hearted" books that can leave you happy& warm & fuzzy inside🔆 after finishing?? I am not a reader but i am mindful of what i read (enough misery in reality lol). But i have been having this itch to just pick up a book and float into another dimension! I wanna be able to transport myself momentarily, to be able to imagine & dream, to expand my perspective too. And leave the book with a smile on face!🤗 Both fiction & non-fiction would be appreciated, Please. Thank You In Advance♥️

Id argue life of pi. I took ap English my last year of high school and the reading list had it among a number of well known novels and plays and of the many classics on the list like Beloved and The Awakening, that was the book i remember most. I remember the plays King Lear and Medea and i remember what the teacher said about Arthur Miller when we were reading death of a salesman but the novels? Only life of pi leaves me with a good feeling. I also vaguely remember catch-22 but that was because it was the only one on the list of books we could choose for the summer homework we had to complete before the first day of class i could find at my local library lol
